Parents Leave extended to 9 weeks

It was announced in Budget 2024 that Parent’s leave and Parent’s Benefit will be extended by 2 weeks from 7 weeks to 9 weeks from August 2024.

Parent’s leave is a statutory entitlement for parents in employment or self-employment.

It aims to let working parents spend more time with their baby or adopted child during the first two years.

Each parent is currently entitled to 7 weeks leave during the first 2 years of the child’s life, or in the case of adoption, within 2 years of the placement of the child with the family.

Parent’s leave can be taken as:

  • One continuous period of 7 weeks leave or
  • Separate periods of not less than one week
