Competency Development

Competencies are a Must for Success

Determining the knowledge, skills and competencies required for success is a must for any organisation (and individual) wishing to drive success through people.  Competencies come from a variety of sources such as:

  1. An analysis of roles

  2. Organisation vision, mission and values

  3. Organisation and department/functional plans and frameworks for executions

  4. Compendium of empirical studies and research

  5. Performance evaluation measures

Employee, manager and leader development plans and performance management should reflect competencies that are relevant and up-to-date for the organisation.

Why is Competency Development Important?

Accurate organisation and role competencies are pivotal in:

  • Individual employee, team leader, manager and leader development

  • Assessment and selection / interviewing

  • Motivation

  • Performance management

  • Retention

  • Talent development

  • Succession planning

Competencies must be carefully aligned with the organisation and roles.

A “one size fits all” approach will not suffice and will lead to leaders, managers and employee claims of lack of relevance. Therefore, all efforts at utilising competencies as a central component in strategic HR activities will be rendered ineffective.
